Psyllium husk is the workhorse of comfortable, regular digestion. It is a gel-forming soluble fibre with an exceptional capacity to hold water, so in the gut it forms a soft, viscous gel that gives stool the right bulk and consistency. The effect is genuinely two-way: it softens stool that is too hard and adds firmness when things are too loose, which is why it is one of the most trusted fibres in the world for everyday regularity.

Unlike rapidly fermented fibres, psyllium passes through largely intact, so it delivers its benefits with very little gas. There is also a long, well-substantiated record behind it. Consuming at least 10 g of psyllium per day contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels, one of the few fibre claims formally authorised in the EU. We include it because few ingredients do more for steady, predictable comfort.

Study type: Narrative review of the clinical literature, synthesising dozens of randomised and controlled human studies across cardiometabolic and gastrointestinal outcomes.

Observed benefits:

  • Normalises stool consistency, softening hard stool and firming loose stool, for steadier regularity.
  • Helps maintain normal blood cholesterol levels at adequate daily intakes.
  • Supports a gentler post-meal blood-sugar curve and a greater sense of fullness.

Mechanisms: Psyllium hydrates into a viscous gel that adds bulk and holds water, slows the digestion of carbohydrates, and binds bile acids, while remaining minimally fermented so it stays intact through the colon.

Safety: Generally very well tolerated, with low gas production. Take with adequate fluid.

Evidence strength: One of the most robust fibre evidence bases available, spanning many controlled human trials.
